If a player feels stupid, cheated, or frustrated, it shouldn’t be the player’s fault. It should be the designer’s responsibility to prevent the player from feeling this way, and to do this, there exists the much beloved activity of play-testing. There are many problems that arise out of a good play-test, but I’m going to focus on the aforementioned one of “visual direction,” to guide the player a specific way.”

Because it should not be the job of the architect to build worlds and indulge the luxury of allowing them to fail at our expense, but that of the writer, the constructor of virtual worlds that live, breathe and, indeed, die in virtuality so that we, in the actual, do not have to expire to prove a point. Only then should we overlay the virtual with the actual to create a stereoscopic representation, a truly interstitial process that places the user at the centre with the power to inform, direct, stage and manage the terms of his or her movement through time and space, perhaps nudging us one step closer to a read/write city in which we are free to ‘tune’ the built environment, free to contribute to the conditions of our cohabitation.”

But following the train careering down the track on the left of the painting to a notebook, we discover Farber slyly inserting himself into the painting. A little reporter’s pad quotes his own notes for his film class on Hawks at UC San Diego. What might be the lines connecting a director at work in the Hollywood studio system and a painter at work in a university––here, cramming for a lecture; or, perhaps, not cramming, but painting A Dandy’s Gesture instead? Who is the gestural dandy of the title? Howard Hawks? Or Farber himself?”

Other than the way she talked, it was hard to see how Rosie the Robot was different from the other characters. But smart interactive robots do not need to look like our mechanical humanoid cousins. Interactive architecture—a burgeoning collaboration across diverse scientific and design communities—has ushered in advancements in manufacturing, behavioral logic, and biologically inspired materials and introduced new ways robotics can enhance our lives. Our spaces and environments—buildings themselves—are becoming the robots, Rosie is becoming the architecture around us, and unprecedented levels of responsiveness and environmental interactivity are becoming a reality.”
